Albany County District Attorney David Soares said he will run for re-election in 2020, seeking his fifth term in office.
Soares, who was first elected in 2004, said he would run on his record of being tough on crime while pushing for reforms within the criminal justice system.
“This hard work has resulted in the reduction of both local jails and state prison populations, proving that you can improve public safety while addressing mass incarceration,” Soares said in a statement announcing his re-election campaign.
The Bethlehem resident first ran in a Democratic primary against his own boss, Albany County DA Paul Clyne, in 2004 and handily beat him.
In more recent years, Soares ran unopposed in the 2012 and 2016 general elections. He beat his last opponent, defense attorney Lee Kindlon, in the 2012 Democratic primary by an unofficial count of 14,498 to 10,1432.
Soares' most recent filing with the state Board of Elections shows a campaign fund balance of $25,672. Soares’ campaign spent $1,554 since July, with $650 of that going to the Albany County and Guilderland Democratic committees. The campaign took in a single $25 contribution during that same time period.
