A New Jersey man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend and business partner almost three years ago and dumping her dismembered remains in a waterway has been sentenced to life in prison.
Raphael Lolos, 43, was given the maximum sentence Friday in the death of 31-year-old Jenny Londono, NorthJersey.com reported. Bergen County prosecutors said she was killed in her Edgewater apartment and her remains dumped in the Hudson River in the summer of 2017.
Prosecutors said Lolos was enraged by suspicions that Londono was seeing someone else and the two argued about money at the Englewood bar they opened less than a year earlier. He bought garbage bags and two meat cleavers shortly after she went missing, and her DNA was found on one of the cleavers in her apartment, they said.
Partial remains of the victim were found in June 2017 in the Red Hook Channel in Brooklyn and identified through a Sanskrit-language tattoo just below the hip. Lolos was convicted last fall of murder, desecrating human remains, hindering apprehension and other counts.
Defense attorney Emile Lisboa said at the sentencing that his client maintains his innocence. He made an unsuccessful last-ditch motion for a new trial, citing a lack of blood, DNA evidence in the bathtub or signs of a struggle at the victim's apartment.
"There was no proof that Mr. Lolos ever used any garbage bags or any meat cleavers," Lisboa said.
Londono's mother, Gladys Quintero, urged the judge to impose the strongest penalty.
"I want the judge to know that this man destroyed my life," she said through a Spanish interpreter. "She was my baby, my daughter, the one I loved most in the world."
Lolos will be elligible for parole in 63 years, prosecutors said.
