COVID-19 cases in Escambia County long-term care centers surge to 138 — doubling in 48 hours - Pensacola News Journal

The number of coronavirus cases in Escambia County long-term care facilities has doubled since Monday evening, surging to 138 on Wednesday evening, according to the Florida Department of Health's latest report.

The increase coincides with local health care agencies starting to provide in-house COVID-19 testing to nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the county.

The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County began an initiative Monday to conduct COVID-19 testing in long-term care facilities, targeting those with confirmed positive cases. Facilities without positive cases can also request testing, according to a statement from the department.

Now with 138 cases, Escambia County has the fifth highest number of cases tied to long-term care in the state, behind only Dade (476), Broward (263), Palm Beach (171) and Manatee (143) counties.

While the state over the weekend released a list of facilities where COVID-19 cases have been identified, the list does not include how many cases or deaths each center has reported or whether they involve residents or staff.

The list named 11 centers in Escambia County, though one of the centers claims they were included on the list after registering a false positive.

As of Wednesday, Santa Rosa County had 10 cases in long-term care, a number that has not changed since Sunday. The Arbors Of Gulf Breeze is the only center in that county with coronavirus cases, according to the state's list.

Throughout the state, 2,333 cases and 248 deaths have been linked to long-term care centers. Seven of Escambia County's 10 coronavirus deaths have been either residents or staff of long-term care centers. There have been no reported deaths in Santa Rosa County tied to long-term care.

Escambia County's total cases at 415; Santa Rosa at 140

As of Wednesday evening, the state has confirmed a total of 415 cases of COVID-19 throughout the county, an increase of 65 from Tuesday evening. The state reported 418 cases on Wednesday morning, but dropped that by three in the evening update, reporting one fewer case in Cantonment and two fewer in Pensacola.

Pensacola residents account for more than 78% of the county's cases, with a total of 325 on Wednesday evening. That's an increase of 52 cases since Tuesday evening. The number of non-Florida residents with COVID-19 in Escambia County more than doubled from 19 on Tuesday to 41 on Wednesday.

Santa Rosa County's cases remained relatively unchanged, adding just one new case in Milton (75) since Tuesday night. The state's report from the morning counted 144 cases in the county, but scaled that back by the evening.

No new deaths in Escambia or Santa Rosa reported Wednesday

No new deaths in either county were reported Wednesday. A total of 16 people have died due to COVID-19 in both counties since the first death on March 6.

Santa Rosa County has reported six deaths, including four inmates at the Blackwater River Correctional Facility in Milton. As of Wednesday morning, 43 inmates and 10 staff members at the prison had tested positive for the virus, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

With about 700 new cases reported since Tuesday evening, the state now has 28,576 COVID-19 cases. The state's death toll reached 927 on Wednesday evening, adding another 60 people since Tuesday evening.

Closer look at testing and hospitalizations

The state reports that 8% of the 5,318 people tested in Escambia County have been positive for COVID-19, while 6% of the 2,217 people in Santa Rosa County have been positive.

Throughout the state, 4,455 people with coronavirus have been admitted into a hospital at some point during the course of their illness. That includes 35 people in Escambia County and 20 in Santa Rosa County.

Escambia County reported Wednesday that area hospitals have 496 beds available out of a total of 1,315. There are also 169 out of 220 ventilators available.
