ST. PAUL, MN -- Minnesota state leaders confirmed Thursday that 11 of the state's 18 COVID-19 deaths have occurred in long-term care facilities or nursing homes.
State officials shared there are 47 long-term care facilities across the state that have reported at least one Covid-19 case. The largest cluster is eight in one facility.
Now, the state's Health Department Commissioner Jan Malcolm says the state has decided to name these facilities.
Malcolm says while they value patient's privacy, they hope this will be a move that could help further stop the spread.
Malcolm says they hope to start naming those facilities by Friday or Saturday.
They will only name facilities with ten or more residents to help protect patient privacy.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also announced Thursday that he is seeking a major disaster declaration from President Trump to help deal with COVI19.
Minnesota’s health plans have also agreed to waive cost-sharing for treatment of COVID-19.
Minnesotans with commercial insurance—including individuals, small businesses, and some large businesses—are now eligible for the following benefits:
-Minnesotans will have no cost-sharing charges for COVID testing.
-Minnesotans who are hospitalized will have no cost-sharing charges for in-network hospitalization.
-Minnesotans will have expanded access to telemedicine services. This will help people to stay home and access care if they need it.
Minnesota’s non-profit health plans that have committed to this framework:
• Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota
• HealthPartners
• Hennepin Health
• Medica
• PreferredOne
• UCare
"Many Minnesotans that receive their coverage through their employer have self-insured plans," according to Walz's office. "The Departments do not have regulatory authority over these plans but are encouraging employers to work with their plan administrators to implement similar measures."
