Shore town bans Airbnb, other short-term rentals to stem spread of coronavirus - NJ.com

The shore town that shut down its beaches and boardwalk in hopes of preventing the spread of the coronavirus took additional measures Sunday, against rentals.

Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian announced the city and its real estate community have decided to suspend short-term rentals. Gillian said he was utilizing Governor Phil Murphy’s Executive Order Number 108 to stop listings on online websites such as Airbnb.

"We all understand the health crisis we are living with, and a temporary moratorium on rentals can only serve to better ensure the health and safety of all Ocean City residents,” Gillian said. "We must all work together to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, and I absolutely believe this is another action that must be taken in our collective efforts.”

Last Wednesday, Gillian had ordered the beaches and the boardwalk closed. However, one day after the edict, people were still seen on both. Online cameras Sunday afternoon showed that many people were staying away, although it was raining.

New Jersey has one of the highest totals of coronavirus cases in the country, with 13,386 people testing positive.

As of Saturday, Cape May County has reported 10 cases of the virus, which causes Covid-19, including a 12-year-old girl. While Ocean City only has one reported case, Gillian hopes the measures will limit the amount of exposure to residents and visitors.

“I am aware of the concerns about an influx of new visitors to Ocean City during the current public health emergency,” Gillian said in the statement. “Although Ocean City ordinarily welcomes all visitors, at this time, we must take all available steps to enforce social distancing recommendations and limit nonessential travel to Ocean City.”
