Batinick wants term limits for Illinois elected state officials - The Herald-News

State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, filed a constitutional amendment to create retroactive term limits in Illinois.

The amendment, HJRCA44, would limit a state senator or representative to serving in office for 12 years. An individual would be able to serve a combined 24 years in the General Assembly, according to a news release.

No person would be able to be elected to an executive branch office, like governor, for more than eight years. The amendment would be retroactive because time served in office prior to its adoption would be considered in the calculation of years of service.

Batinick, R-Plainfield, said he's long advocated for term limits because they're necessary for a "responsible and transparent" government. He added Republicans felt retroactive limits were necessary considering an "uptick in corruption plaguing the statehouse" over the last several months.

“No amount of laws will make us immune to corruption, but we can minimize the root cause,” Batinick said in the release. “If we are serious about ethics reform, this is a strong start to prevent concentrated power and the influence peddling that goes along with that. To part with the corruption that has become the norm for us and the disappointment of our taxpayers, we need change.”

Batinick filed the legislation so residents could vote on a constitutional amendment during the 2020 general election in November.

State Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, was one of several cosponsors of the legislation in the House.
