Flight makes emergency landing at Shannon Airport after passenger dies on board - Limerick Leader

A PASSENGER has died on board a transatlantic flight that was forced to divert to Shannon Airport for an emergency landing.

According to reports, an elderly woman in her 70s died on the United Airlines flight, despite attempts to resuscitate her.

The United Airlines flight UA-961 was travelling from Frankfurt, Germany to Newark in the US when the incident occurred and it diverted to Shannon, making an emergency landing just after 2pm this Wednesday.

Gardai have confirmed that "a passenger was pronounced dead after the flight landed at Shannon. The local coroner has been notified and the body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination will be carried out."

Emergency medical crews greeted the plane on landing at the airport, while fire and rescue crews were also placed on standby.

The woman passed away despite the best efforts of crew and passengers to resuscitate her.

It's understood that a number of passengers and cabin crew jumped into action when the woman suffered a 'sudden cardiac arrest' on the flight from Germany to the US.

One passenger told of how people took turns administering CPR, while at least one shock was also delivered with a defibrillator.
