230 jobs are to be created at a plastics factory in Sligo town as part of a global expansion by its American owners. GW Plastics manufactures injection molding for the medical devices, diagnostics and pharmaceutical industries. The US firm purchased Avenue Mould Solutions two years ago. The original firm was set up by locals in Sligo in 1988. GW Plastics employs more than 1,200 people worldwide, with plants in the US, Mexico and China as well as the Irish branch, which is based at Finisklin Industrial Estate in Sligo. The firm plans to invest €5.7m to grow their product development, thermoplastic and silicone injection moulding, and contract assembly capabilities in Europe. The company plans to expand its moulding operations into a scalable 23,000 square foot site in IDA's Business and Technology Park in Finisklin, Sligo. This expansion will allow for the creation of over 200 new jobs in the areas of production, quality, regulatory, and engineering. At the start of this month the firm announced that it is investing $25 million to expand its worldwide operations. In a press release, the company said it was "looking at further expansions in 2019 in the US, Ireland, and Mexico" for its "thermoplastic and silicone molding and contract manufacturing business". The project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said Sligo is recognised as a major regional centre under Project Ireland 2040, the Government's national development plan. Meanwhile, the Taoiseach and the Minister for Transport are to turn the sod today on a €150m project to develop the N4 between Collooney and Castlebaldwin. The 15km stretch of the main route between Dublin and the northwest was described as one of the worst in the country by Sligo's county coroner at an inquest into a 2015 crash. Separately, 100 jobs were also announced for Dublin this morning by IQVIA, a US firm that provides support services in the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical sectors. Let's block ads!
