The Detroit Regional Chamber's political action committee has endorsed Mayor Mike Duggan for a third time.
The chamber's backing comes early in the race as other candidates have until April to file to run for the seat with a primary coming Aug. 3 and general election Nov. 2.
The Detroit-based but regionally focused chamber of commerce said in a news release Tuesday morning that Duggan will work well with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's and President-elect Joe Biden's administrations in the coming years.
"Mayor Duggan is one of the finest mayors in the nation and Detroit continues to benefit from his bold leadership," Brad Williams, the chamber's vice president of government relations, said in a news release. "In 2020, we saw how much Mayor Duggan's leadership mattered in guiding the city amid national crises in pursuit of racial justice and navigating the COVID-19 pandemic that cost too many lives. That is continuing with the city's vaccination rollout."
The second-term Democrat has secured wide corporate support over the years.
Business leaders from various industries make up the chamber's PAC board that decides on its election endorsements based on at least a two-thirds consensus, according to the chamber's website. Candidates submit responses to a survey and get interviewed.
While the chamber praised Duggan's role in "pursuit of racial justice," the mayor has also been criticized on that issue, including by Detroit Will Breathe, a group that protested throughout 2020 against police brutality on Black Americans and other Detroit issues.
It's not yet clear who will step into the race to challenge Duggan. State Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, D-Detroit, has said she's planning to run but isn't expected to decide until late this month.
Three people have set up candidate committees so far to run for mayor this year.
Anthony Adams, partner at Marine Adams Law PC in Detroit and a former Detroit deputy mayor and interim director of the city's Department of Water and Sewerage, set up a committee in February for the August primary.
Winnie Atieno Imbuchi, an urban farmer and chef, also registered a committee in November and has a recently active Facebook page, Atieno for Mayor of Detroit, 2021.
Myya Jones also formed a committee in January. Jones ran against Duggan in 2017, saying "Women and Millennials are under represented in our American political system," according to reporting by the Detroit Metro Times.
The chamber's PAC took in $47,000 in donations in 2020 and spent nearly $64,000 on candidates, including David Coulter's successful bid for Oakland County executive.
It gave $15,000 for Duggan's re-election in 2017, also donating to the campaigns of City Council President Brenda Jones and members André Spivey, Gabe Leland, Scott Benson, James Tate and Janeé Ayers.
A super PAC registered at the chamber's address, Suite 1900 at One Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit with its treasurer registered as Williams, gave a much larger sum — $125,000 — for Duggan's re-election in 2017 through a super PAC that backed him, Turnaround Detroit.
Duggan donors in the last mayoral election cycle also included the political action committees of big companies including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, DTE Energy Co., Honigman LLP and Dan Gilbert's Quicken Loans portfolio of companies, now called Rocket Companies Inc. He also got major support from West Michigan business leaders.
