TAMPA — Eleven more residents of Hillsborough County long-term care facilities have died, according to the latest data released by the state Friday.
A total of 13 people have now died of the coronavirus after becoming infected while residing in the county’s long-term care institutions.
The deaths come days after two major outbreaks of COVID-19 were reported at two Hillsborough facilities: Community Convalescent Center in Plant City and the Bristol at Tampa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in the University area.
When the outbreaks were reported earlier this week, only two Bristol residents were known to have died. When the state released its newest data Friday, it showed an additional eight more deaths at the nursing home.
Community Convalescent Center suffered its first fatalities. The state now says two residents have died.
Promise Pointe at Tampa Oaks, an assisted living facility in Temple Terrace, also recorded its first death.
The latest data on Friday also shows a rise in the number of confirmed coronavirus infections at Hillsborough facilities. There are now 85 total cases at Community Convalescent Center, with 68 residents and 17 staffers now testing positive.
The Bristol at Tampa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center has 73 confirmed cases: 57 residents and 16 staffers were infected at the facility in the University area of Tampa.
Those two account for the vast majority of COVID-19 cases in the county’s long-term facilities. Hillsborough County officials and the facilities’ operators have said little about the situations at either nursing home.
Pinellas’ and HIllsborough’s long-term care infections and deaths follow the grim pattern the rest of Florida is experiencing. Residents and staffers of long-term care now account for at least 665 of the state’s death toll — nearly 40 percent of those who have lost their lives to the coronavirus in the state.
