Melissa Hedlund, 46, suffered smoke inhalation and burns from the fire at 23096 Duffney Road.
Hedlund's 2-year-old son, Micah, was killed in the blaze, according to the Becker County Sheriff's Office.
Another child, a 5-year-old girl, also suffered smoke inhalation and burns, according to the sheriff's office release.
The girl and Hedlund both were airlifted to a Minneapolis hospital. Hedlund's condition was listed as critical Tuesday afternoon, according to Christine Hill with Hennepin Healthcare Media Relations.
A condition for the child was not immediately available.
An adult male was also injured, and was airlifted to a Fargo hospital for smoke inhalation, according to the sheriff's office.
Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander said in a phone interview Tuesday that "there is nothing at this point to suggest that the fire is suspicious in nature." He added that investigators have an idea where in the home the fire started, but aren't releasing that information. And he said the State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
Callaway Fire Chief Keith Heinlein said there were 13 people in the house at the time of the fire, a mixture of adults, kids and foster kids. "It was definitely a tragedy," he said.
Smoke alarms alert children
Hedlund and her husband, Michael Hedlund, 48, are the owners of the home, about 9 miles northeast of Detroit Lakes.
The fire was reported to 911 at around 12:46 a.m. Sunday, May 24.
Upon arriving, the house was “fully engulfed,” and one child was unaccounted for, according to the sheriff's office.
The sheriff’s office says that children in the basement were alerted by smoke alarms going off. When they got to the main floor, they saw flames and went to alert other family members, according to the release. A stairway leading to upstairs bedrooms was blocked by flames.
Michael and Melissa Hedlund were able to exit through a second-floor window, according to the release. After learning that the 2-year-old was unaccounted for, the child’s father and older brother went back into the home, but were unable because of the fire, according to the release.
Micah Hedlund was later found deceased, according to the sheriff's office release.
Firefighters from Callaway responded to the scene, along with fire departments from Detroit Lakes, Frazee and Audubon. St. Mary’s EMS, Detroit Lakes police and the Minnesota State Patrol also assisted.
Editor J.J. Perry and reporter Nathan Bowe contributed to this report.
GoFundMe
A GoFundMe page was created for the Hedlund family by Brianna Hoffner of Rochert, according to the page. The $20,000 goal "will be used for funeral costs, medical bills, as well as getting back on their feet," according to the page. Almost $16,000 was raised by late Tuesday afternoon.
