St. Paul school board chairwoman Marny Xiong and her father both are critically ill with COVID-19, according to a public Facebook post by her sister.
Xiong, 31, and her father are “relying heavily” on a ventilator to breathe, Amee Xiong wrote Friday morning.
She said her father is an essential worker who had been regularly reporting for work, where a fellow employee fell ill. It’s also possible he was infected at a funeral, where another man had COVID-19, she said.
Marny Xiong may have gotten sick while visiting her father, Amee Xiong said.
“Please pray for both of them. And please stay home. You only read about it but when it hits you close to home to the people you love, it’s a reality check. You feel so helpless,” Amee Xiong wrote.
Statewide, 198 people were in critical condition with COVID-19 as of late Thursday, according to the Department of Health. Of the 10,088 Minnesotans to test positive so far, 15 percent have required hospitalization. Five percent of those who tested positive have died, one as young as 30.
Marny Xiong, a graduate of the St. Paul school district, was elected to the school board in 2017. She works for the Minneapolis school district as the school administrative manager at Hmong International Academy.
“The SPPS community offers our support and positive thoughts for Marny Xiong and her family,” St. Paul Superintendent Joe Gothard said in a prepared statement.
“We know her as a friend and fighter; a fighter for student equity, student opportunity and student achievement. Her spirit of not giving up has never been more important. We are grateful for the medical care she is receiving and we look forward to her return to health in the near future.”
