Eight of Escambia County's 168 coronavirus cases now involve either residents or staff of long-term care facilities, according to the latest report released Tuesday evening by the Florida Department of Health.
That number has ballooned since just one case in an Escambia County long-term care center was reported Friday morning. By Monday evening, the case count was up to three. Now with eight, Escambia County's cases make up 2% of the 380 cases statewide that have been reported in long-term care centers, most of which are in South Florida.
The state's report does not identify any of the facilities where the cases are located nor whether the affected people are residents or staff.
Second COVID-19 death reported in Escambia County
Also on Tuesday, the health department confirmed that a 78-year-old man from Escambia County died Monday after contracting the coronavirus, marking the county's second reported COVID-19 death in four days.
A 75-year-old woman who died Friday was Escambia County's first coronavirus death. Santa Rosa County had previously reported two deaths, a 71-year-old man who died March 5 and an 81-year-old woman who died March 26.
Neither of Escambia County's two COVID-19 deaths were travel-related, according to the health department. The man who passed away had contact with a confirmed coronavirus case, while the woman did not.

Escambia County at 168 cases, Santa Rosa at 66
Escambia County now has 168 confirmed COVID-19 cases — up by 27 from the 141 cases reported Monday evening. That includes 21 new cases in Pensacola since Monday evening, bringing the city's total to 121. The county also now has 15 non-residents who have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the latest figures.
Santa Rosa County has added two new cases since Monday evening, one in Milton (25) and one in (Navarre (17). The county now has 66 confirmed cases.
Florida reported 1,118 new coronavirus cases since Monday evening to reach a total of 14,747. An additional 42 people have died since Monday evening for a total of 296 deaths, as of Tuesday evening.
Testing and hospitalizations
About 6% of the people who have been tested for the coronavirus in both Escambia and Santa Rosa counties have been positive. The state reported Tuesday evening that 3,813 people have been tested in both counties. However, public health officials have cautioned that testing numbers reported by the Florida Department of Health have lagged behind numbers reported by locally by Pensacola area hospitals.
In the state, 1,894 people have been hospitalized due to COVID-19, including 15 in Escambia and 10 in Santa Rosa counties.
The health department has further clarified that its hospitalization count reflects confirmed cases in which inpatient hospitalization occurred at any time during the course of illness. The number does not represent the number of COVID-19 positive people currently hospitalized. The health department said it does not have that data at this time.
