Coronavirus: People in long-term care facilities account for nearly half of COVID-19 deaths in Massachusetts - MassLive.com

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health released new numbers showing that the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected long-term care facilities across the state.

Of the 686 coronavirus-related deaths reported in Massachusetts by Saturday, 44% were reported in long-term care facilities.

On Tuesday, House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Rep. Ruth Balser of Newton filed legislation requiring all long-term care facilities in the state to report to the DPH the number of positive tests and deaths in their facilities daily.

The DPH released the number of deaths at long-term care facilities for the first time on Friday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes appear to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.

In Hampden County, half the veterans at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home have now contracted the coronavirus with 30 residents who have died from the disease and 76 others infected with COVID-19.

On Saturday, the number of positive coronavirus cases in the state stands at 22,860, including the 686 reported deaths. More than 10% of the long-term care facilities in the state them have reported infections in their homes.

Gov. Charlie Baker said at his press conference on Friday, that the health care systems in Massachusetts will be stretched like never before. It’s not just the patients and residents that are at risk but the caregivers.

In New York, of the 8,627 deaths that have been attributed to COVID-19 on Saturday, nearly 2,000 of them are residents of nursing homes with thousands of other residents showing symptoms, according to the New York Times.

Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center have previously spoken out about the strain that their hospitals, with large numbers of their health care professionals testing positive for COVID-19.

According to a report by Commonwealth Magazine, as many as 40% of the health industry’s workers are out either because they have tested positive or are quarantined.
