Coronavirus forces Shore county to ban all short-term rentals - NJ.com

The freeholder board in Cape May County unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday to immediately close all hotels, motels, guest houses, and other short-term rentals amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The county said the measure was passed in order to have a uniform policy.

Towns such as Ocean City, Cape May, Avalon, North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Sea Isle City had already banned short-term rental bans themselves.

As of Tuesday, Cape May County itself has had 100 reported cases of the virus, resulting in two deaths.

“This is a necessary step, and we are glad the Governor [Phil Murphy] recognized our position, which I was the first to voice weeks ago,” Cape May County Freeholder Director Gerald Thornton said in a statement. “We do not need visitors at this time. We must do everything we can to flatten the curve. The more we discourage people from traveling at this time, it will help eliminate the spread of COVID-19. When we can ensure it is safe, I will be the first one to welcome tourists will open arms.”

The freeholders said they would continue to monitor the situation to reopen these businesses as soon as it is safe to do so.

“This is not a decision we want to make but one we have to make,” Freeholder Jeffrey Pierson said. “We are doing everything we can do to limit sickness and loss of life now and hopefully preserve some of the summer economic activity going forward. But the time to act is now.”
