Three more cases of COVID-19 have been reported in long-term care centers in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties overnight, bringing the total to 67, according to the latest report released Saturday morning by the Florida Department of Health.
New coronavirus cases in Escambia County grew to 303 Saturday morning, a jump from the 290 cases reported Friday evening. Santa Rosa County saw a small jump from 130 positive cases to 132.
With an additional 14 deaths verified overnight, the state's coronavirus-related death toll reached 740 on Saturday morning.
No new deaths were reported in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties on Saturday morning. Twelve people in both counties have died due to COVID-19 since the start of the outbreak, with each county reporting six deaths.
In Escambia County, four of the deaths were in long-term care facilities. The state has refused to identify the facilities or whether the positive cases involve residents or staff.
Four of Santa Rosa County's deaths have been inmates at the Blackwater River Correctional Facility, a privately operated state prison in East Milton where 34 inmates and nine workers have tested positive for the coronavirus.
More than 500 new positive cases have been counted since Friday evening to bring the state's total cases to 25,269.
Long-term care center cases up to 58 in Escambia County, 9 in Santa Rosa County
Escambia County saw two new coronavirus cases in long-term care centers, now up to 58 cases in total. Santa Rosa County saw one new case, bring its total to nine.
Santa Rosa County's jump in long-term care cases is likely tied to the Arbors of Gulf Breeze assisted living facility. An official with the facility's management company confirmed Friday there were "multiple cases" at the center, and the city of Gulf Breeze's emergency management department said earlier in the week that there were eight coronavirus cases of "asymptomatic elderly residents of a multi-family complex."
Escambia and Santa Rosa counties have 435 total cases
Positive COVID-19 cases grew in both counties to a total of 435, a jump of 15 new cases since Friday night.
Of Escambia County's 303 cases, 238 of them are Pensacola residents, according to Saturday morning's numbers. Another 33 are Cantonment residents.
In Santa Rosa County, both Gulf Breeze and Jay reported one new case, respectively, bringing the total number of cases in the county to 132.
The state has added more than 500 new cases since Friday night to reach a total of 25,269 by Saturday morning.
Testing and hospitalizations
Statewide, 3,680 people who have tested positive for COVID-19 have required hospitalization at some point, though that number does not reflect the current number of coronavirus patients in the hospital. That's an increase of 31 people from Friday's evening total.
Locally, 43 people — 27 in Escambia and 16 in Santa Rosa counties — have been hospitalized because of COVID-19.
The state reports that as of Saturday morning, 7% of the 6,319 people in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties who have been tested for COVID-19 have been confirmed positive.
It typically takes a few days for a collected sample to be tested and the data to be shared with the state, which is why local testing numbers are slightly ahead of the state. According to the latest available numbers compiled by Escambia County, 6,434 people have been tested through Thursday at local hospitals and drive-thru sites.
