A masked man with an assault rifle suspected of robbing a Ferndale 7-Eleven store before he was shot by police last week remains hospitalized.
Police shot the man after they say they spotted him inside a car Thursday in an alley in Oak Park near Sherman and Nine Mile Road and he refused to comply with officers commands and tried to evade them.
“He’s still in critical condition,” Ferndale Officer Jilliam Mahlmeister said Monday.
The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Police have not identified the man, who is also suspected in a carjacking and shooting in Detroit about 25 minutes before he showed up at the 7-Eleven store at West Nine Mile and Pinecrest in Ferndale.
Surveillance video of the robbery at 5:50 p.m. Thursday shows the suspect entering the crowded store with an assault rifle covered by a sheet.
He was wearing body armor similar to what police use and fired a shot into the store’s ceiling and demanded money.
“Several people ran out of the store quickly after he fired the shot,” Mahlmeister said.
Some children were still in the store and hiding during the robbery, police said. The gunman kept his assault rifle leveled at clerks behind the counter.
He fled the store with a large amount of cash, according to police.
“We had a witness who saw the (gunman) run from the store and gave our dispatch a description of the vehicle and the direction of travel for him,” Mahlmeister said.
Ferndale police located the gunman a short time later in Oak Park. Police said they gave him commands and fired several shots when he attempted to evade them.
Officers immediately “rendered life-saving measures and the suspect was transported to a local hospital,” police said in a statement.
Ferndale police Monday would not disclose whether the suspect was still wearing body armor when he was shot, saying the investigation is in the hands of the sheriff’s office.
In a police news release Friday, Ferndale Police Chief Dennis Emmi said he turned the case over to the sheriff’s special investigations unit. He said the police department is committed to a “thorough and meticulous investigative process and transparent sharing of information …”
“The incident … is an example of the difficult reality of policing and a scenario that no officer ever wants to encounter,” Emmi said. “I can assure you that they are trained to treat these decisions critically and with the utmost gravity.”
