ALPENA COUNTY, MI – A 25-year-old man is in critical condition after he crashed a classic Corvette in Northern Michigan.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Alpena Post responded to the scene of the single-vehicle crash on Long Rapids Road between Haken Road and Cathro Road in Alpena County’s Maple Ridge Township at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 25.
Police say Nathan William Douglas of Alpena was driving a 1974 Corvette northwest on Long Lake Road when he crossed the center line and drove off the south side of the road, striking several trees before coming to rest in the ditch.
Douglas was found unconscious and unresponsive in the vehicle, police said. EMS and fire arrived on scene shortly after and rendered first aid and extracted him from the vehicle.
Douglas was taken to Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Alpena and later flown to Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Midland. He has since been taken to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and listed in critical condition, according to police.
The preliminary investigation shows no signs of intoxicants. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, and it appears the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, police said.
