Nebraska crops: Corn condition falls, soybeans bounce back

Nebraska crop conditions were mixed last week as corn condition falls one percent while soybeans bounced back.

Northeast Nebraska farmer Jason Penke says his only complaint about his crops are insects in his soybeans. “I have seen some aphids.  I’ve seen the been leaf beetle and I think our crops look really good for the most part.  I would say everyone in our area is trying to protect what we could potentially have.”

The latest crop progress report from the USDA says 66 percent of soybeans have set pods with 80 percent of the crop rated good-to-excellent. Penke says, “Soybeans – we’re in that R3, R4 state as we’re getting a lot of pods  coming through.”

Corn condition is rated 71 percent good-to-excellent with 97 percent of the crop silking.

The corn and soybean grower from Craig tells Brownfield, “Corn wise, we’re in that blister milk stage.”

Ninety-five percent of winter wheat has been harvested.

Sorghum is rated 64 percent in good to excellent condition with 49 percent of the crop headed, 12 percent behind last year.

Eighty-nine percent of oats have been harvested.

Dry edible bean condition is rated at 76 percent good to excellent with 43 percent of the crop setting pods.

Nebraska’s pasture and range conditions are rated 80 percent fair-to-excellent condition.
