An unvaccinated 38-year-old woman who gave birth on Saturday is in critical condition after contracting the coronavirus, according to Hebrew media reports.
The woman, from the southern city of Ashkelon, reportedly underwent an emergency delivery on Saturday after arriving at the hospital in serious condition on Friday. Her husband, who is also reportedly unvaccinated, and their three children, are all also infected with COVID.
Though she gave birth at Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, she was transferred on Sunday in critical condition to the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon, after being attached to a ECMO machine, which does the work of a person’s heart and lungs in order to allow them to recover.
According to reports, the new mother is suffering respiratory failure due to COVID, but her baby girl, who is currently in the NICU, is in good condition and is expected to be discharged in the coming days.
As of Sunday evening, 201 people in Israel are hospitalized with COVID, 101 are in serious condition and 19 are on respirators. Over half of Israelis are fully vaccinated.
