FRANKFORT, Ky. (KT) – A longtime state lawmaker has announced that she will not be seeking a seventh term in office in 2022.
Sen. Alice Forgy Kerr, R-Lexington, who has served the 12th Senate District since 1999, issued a statement regarding her decision:
“It has been both an honor and a privilege to represent Fayette County in the Kentucky Senate for the last 23 years. My heart is full of gratitude and appreciation to the voters who have elected me six times as their state senator in Frankfort. Throughout my tenure in the General Assembly, I have tried to be a loyal and faithful servant for my district.
“After much prayerful consideration, I have decided that I will not be a candidate for re-election in 2022. I make this decision knowing that there are other capable individuals in the district that will give voters a choice as to who will represent the 12th Senate District beginning in 2023.
“I could not have made this journey for more than two decades without the steadfast support of my family, friends, and constituents whose love and encouragement have sustained me. I thank the good Lord for the many blessings He has bestowed on us.
“I am proud to have played a role in many significant issues that have confronted our Commonwealth.
“Throughout my life, I have had various opportunities to serve others. I will pause for now, but I look forward to seeing what God has in store for the next chapter of my life.”
Her statement, which she posted on Facebook, drew hundreds of messages of support, including her Senate colleagues of both political parties.
From Senate Majority Caucus Chair Julie Raque Adams, R-Louisville: “You’re a wonderful Kentuckian and friend. You will be missed dearly.”
Sen. Robin Webb, D-Grayson, stated: “I respect your decision, but am saddened by it. It is an honor to serve with you. You are exemplary in character, compassion, and love for those in your district and this Commonwealth. I love you and am proud to call you friend.”
A fellow Fayette County lawmaker, Rep. Killian Timoney, R-Lexington, said: “You are such a supportive person and friend. I am indebted to you for all of your help. I won’t be able to repay you for your kindness in ten lifetimes. Thank you for everything.”
In addition to serving on numerous legislative committees, Kerr was also co-chair of the Severe Mental Illness Task Force.
