MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A Memphis police officer is in critical condition after being dragged by a car while serving a subpoena Wednesday afternoon.
Cop cars lined Alma Street in North Memphis Wednesday.
According to the Memphis Police Department, one of their officers arrived in the 700 block of Alma just before 1:30 p.m. to serve a subpoena to an unidentified individual.
“They were coming to serve my sister some papers to go to court on her ex-boyfriend,” said Lashonda Green.
Green claimed to be the sister of the person at the center of the investigation.
According to police, once officers spotted the subpoena recipient, the individual walked past the officers and got into the driver’s seat of a 2010 Ford Fusion where another person was already inside on the passenger side with the door open. Police say when an officer tried to serve the subpoena through the passenger door, the driver backed up and struck the officer and a patrol car.
“He was drugged by the vehicle. It’s very preliminary, the nature of his injuries, but they’re very serious injuries right now,” said Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis.
Davis says the injured MPD officer worked closely with federal partners and federal prosecutors were on the scene of the incident as well.
However, Green who says she she was an eyewitness to the incident, tells a very different story about the actions of the officer.
“No, he opened the door. He opened the back door as the back door was moving and dived in and in the midst of him diving in , the other unmarked car came in and hit my sister’s car,” said Green.
Green also claims the officers serving the subpoena did not identify themselves.
“At this time, it’s still very early on, but these officers were dressed in their MPD uniforms of the day and they were also with other federal officials to issue this subpoena,” said Davis.
Davis also said the car the individual hit was a marked MPD vehicle.
This is the second law enforcement officer hit by a moving vehicle in two days in the city of Memphis.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s an officer or if it’s a citizen,” said Davis. “We have individuals that are driving reckless in our city right now and we’re working right now to suppress that right now. Today is a prime example of a driver behind the wheel that took an aggressive action.”
