Police said a Columbia, Lancaster County man was hospitalized in critical condition after a Thursday morning home invasion-style assault in his Furnace Avenue home.
Borough police said the 58-year-old victim told them that Michael Newport entered his home about 10:45 a.m., chased him around and beat him up. No motive for the attack was listed.
At about 9:45 p.m. Thursday, Michael A. Newport II was arrested at a vacant farm property just outside of Columbia. Police said Newport, who is 36, told officers several times that he had “killed a man today.” Newport, who is believed to be homeless, was committed to Lancaster County Prison on charges of aggravated assault and burglary.
The victim was taken to Lancaster General Hospital, where police said he was listed in critical condition as of Thursday night.
