Jaguars not expected to sign Cam Robinson to long-term deal prior to deadline - Big Cat Country

The Jaguars will not be re-signing left tackle Cam Robinson to a long-term contract prior to the deadline for franchise-tagged players tomorrow. This was expected, and according to a report from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Robinson isn’t the only player expected to play this year on the franchise tag.

The deadline to re-sign franchise-tagged players is tomorrow.

Jacksonville originally placed the tag on Robinson just prior to the new league year beginning in March, while Robinson would sign the 1-year, $13.754M deal later that month on the 18th. He was originally drafted by the team in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Over the past few seasons, Robinson has had up-and-down performances for Jacksonville. In 2018, the veteran left tackle would tear his ACL in Week 2, missing the majority of the season as a result. In 2019, Robinson was able to return, but his surgically repaired knee hampered his play.

Last season, the fifth-year offensive tackle was able to perform better than a year prior, showcasing why the team felt strongly about him in the first place after selecting him out of Alabama.

Though Robinson did perform at a higher level, the team’s bookend tackles left something to be desired, something Robinson and right tackle Jawaan Taylor will look to prove this year with an improved quarterback behind center.

Jaguars offensive line coach George Warhop made that known during his press conference earlier this year. While both Robinson and Taylor excelled in the run game last season, where they lacked consistent form was in the pass-protection game.

“And that’s a technique issue and a consistency issue. And that’s been addressed and will continue to be addressed, those guys know it,” said Warhop. “It’s something that we’re not shying away from, so it’ll get better.”

The Jaguars selected tackle Walker Little in the second round of this year’s draft. Little is expected to play a major role for the team in the future, and could ultimately be Robinson’s replacement if the two sides are unable to come to an agreement on a new deal next season.

For now, Robinson will continue his tenure with the Jaguars, perhaps his final season with the team.
