By unanimous endorsement of the Republican convention on July 20, incumbent Branford First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove was backed to run for a fifth consecutive term in the November 2021 municipal election, topping a GOP party ticket that seeks to retain the current, eight-year Republican majority in the administration and on the Representative Town Meeting (RTM). The convention also unanimously endorsed current selectwoman Angela Higgins as Cosgrove's running mate.
The endorsements topped a full slate of GOP candidates nominated to run in the 2021 municipal election by voice votes of Branford Republicans attending a convention held at the Joe Trapasso Community House on July 20.
Cosgrove, who ran uncontested and won a fourth consecutive term to the First Selectman's seat in 2019, will be contested by Democratic challenger and current RTM Minority Leader Tom Brockett in the 2021 race. As previously reported, Dunbar and his running mate, current selectman Ray Dunbar, announced their campaign topping the Branford Democratic ticket on March 10, 2021.
Thanking those attending the July 20 convention, Cosgrove said it was an honor to once again be endorsed as the candidate for First Selectman and has been an honor and a privilege to serve in that role for four terms, to date.
Cosgrove also reflected on the wisdom and support of the late Joe Higgins, his four-term running mate, who passed away in June 2020. Cosgrove thanked Angela Higgins for taking up the seat in 2020 to complete her husband's term, as well as her commitment to run for the seat in the 2021 election. Higgins rallied the crowd to support "Team Jamie."
"We're a team of integrity and civility...but really we're a team," said Cosgrove. "It takes each and everyone of us to really represent the town to move things forward, bring our vision forward. [In that] we've been successful in the last eight years, and we will continue to be successful. That is why we've earned the support of the community... because we've had vision, we've had respect in the opinions and input of others. It's not about just our party...that's how we govern, and that's how we're going to continue to govern for the next two years and beyond."
Following his endorsement, Cosgrove spoke with The Sound and reflected on the past eight years leading the town.
"When we ran in 2013, there were specific issues that we felt needed to be addressed, and that's what we really campaigned on," said Cosgrove. "I think we've evolved as a party – while there are still issues that can be identified and addressed, it's about respect and understanding the community's needs. There may be ideas or issues that will come forward and it's really about providing the leadership to get things done, to move things forward, for the betterment of our entire community."
