Two new alternatives to San Diego Gas & Electric begin serving electric customers in certain areas of the county in 2021. Community choice aggregation, or CCA, energy programs act as an alternative to investor-owned utilities by purchasing their own energy contracts that promise to come from cleaner power sources at prices equal to or lower than traditional utilities. Starting in May and June, the Clean Energy Alliance expects to start serving about 58,000 customer accounts in Del Mar, Solana Beach and Carlsbad. A much larger CCA called San Diego Community Power will also roll out in 2021. It will serve about 770,000 accounts in five cities — San Diego, Chula Vista, Encinitas, La Mesa and Imperial Beach. Municipal, industrial and commercial customers are scheduled to transition from SDG&E to SDCP starting in March. The vast number of SDCP’s estimated 700,000 residential customers, however, will not transfer until January 2022. Under state regulations, utility customers are automatically enrolled into the CCAs of their respective communities but if customers want to remain with SDG&E, they can do so by opting out for free.
