HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) -
After months of feeling the impact of the coronavirus, long-term care facilities continue to feel the impact as we enter 2021.
Scott Lockard, Kentucky River District Public Health Director, says these facilities have been a concern for public health officials since the beginning of the pandemic.
“When the virus started spreading that the people most susceptible to a negative outcome and even death was those who are in our older age categories and those with comorbidities those with other underlying health conditions,” said Lockard. “It’s impossible to put a protective bubble around any one group of people or one facility and totally keep the virus out. "
These types of facilities across the region have seen the spread of the virus including Hazard Health and Rehabilitation.
“They have had plans in place and now they have implemented those plants. They have had Covid positive wings they try to isolate those patients that do test positive for the virus and contain it the best they can,” said Lockard. “We always have to remember we get so caught up in talking about numbers and figures and data every one of these numbers represents a person. That’s a family, that’s a life. "
The facility has a total of 244 positive cases including 162 residents and 82 staff. 43 of those cases are active. 17 death have also been reported at the facility.
Lockard says he does have hope for 2021.
“We will be so excited when we have ample supply of vaccines so we can vaccinate the public and get everybody protected. This vaccine is truly our greatest hope for getting life back to normal. "
We have reached out to Hazard Health and Rehabilitation and are waiting to hear back.
