A.J. Moore wants long-term future with Texans - Houston Chronicle

Texans safety A.J. Moore has displayed range, instincts and skill on special teams and increased his contributions on defense in his third NFL season.

A pending restricted free agent, Moore is hoping to parlay his progress into a long-term contract. The Texans can retain Moore on a one-year tender for roughly $2.4 million, but it could make more sense to explore signing Moore to a long-term contract.

And Moore, who's starting with Eric Murray on the COVID-19 reserve list, is more than open to that idea.

“There is no other place I would want to be," Moore said. "I love Houston. I was saying how crazy this business is, I hate that people may have to leave and things like that. I love the staff that we have and everyone that contributed. I love it here in Houston and I want to be here. I would love to get a long-term deal done with these guys.”

In 10 games and four starts, Moore has recorded 26 tackles, one for a loss and two quarterback hits. Moore strained his hamstring against the Pittsburgh Steelers and was placed on injured reserve.

Moore has played 285 snaps for 28 percent of the defensive playing time.

“I’ve learned so much, man, especially at the safety position and, of course, on special teams as well," Moore said. "Most importantly I need to treat my body better. I learned that. I missed a couple games, so I definitely know that I need to treat myself a little better and just continue to move forward.”

The 4-11 Texans face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at NRG Stadium. The Titans can win the AFC South division title with a win.

"Everybody is ready to go in and just give everything we’ve got and put it all on the line one last time for each other," Moore said. "It’s a crazy business so this may be the last time this specific group will be together, so we’re just going to go out with a bang.”

The Texans have gone 4-7 under interim coach Romeo Crennel, 73, since firing Bill O'Brien. Players like Moore have enjoyed playing for Crennel.

“It’s been amazing," Moore said. "He's always bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, that’s the term he likes to use. That pretty much explains him best. He gets the best out of all of us. Just a real, genuine guy, you’ve got to love that. You want to play for someone like that. We love him here.”
