SAN ANTONIO – A suspect is in critical condition after an argument during an outdoor Thanksgiving gathering held outside a home led to a shooting on the city’s South Side, San Antonio police say.

Police said the suspect, the ex-husband of a woman at the Thanksgiving gathering, went to the home in the 700 block of Brunswick Boulevard, just east of I-35, around 5 p.m. Thursday.

According to police, the ex-husband was upset because his ex-wife had a new lover, so he was going to confront the woman and her new lover.

The man got into an argument with one of the family members and then shot toward the home, hitting the ex-wife in the hand and her aunt in the buttocks, police said.

Another person at the home had a firearm and returned fire at the suspect, hitting him in the stomach and chest area.

The suspect then took himself to Downtown Baptist for treatment, but he was transported to the Brooke Army Medical Center, where he is in critical condition.

Emergency medical services personnel treated the ex-wife at the scene, and her aunt was taken to BAMC.

The suspect faces two or three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge.

Police said the person who shot the suspect acted in self-defense and is not expected to face any charges.
