A St. Paul police officer shot a man in the North End on Saturday night after officers searched for him for more than an hour in connection to a domestic assault and vehicle crash, according to the police department.
The man was taken to Regions Hospital for treatment, where police said he was in stable condition after he was wounded about 9:15 p.m. in the area of Rice Street and Magnolia Avenue.
The incident began shortly before 8 p.m. when police received a report about a vehicle crash at Maryland Avenue and Rice Street. Police were told a female’s ex-boyfriend was assaulting her, which caused the crash, according to emergency radio traffic.
Police were also told the 31-year-old man held a steak knife to the female’s neck, and that he was naked and on drugs.
About 10 minutes later, police received a report that a naked man walked into a home and left after taking a bottle of orange juice from the refrigerator. He was last seen on Magnolia Avenue.
Officers set up a perimeter and searched the area, including Oakland Cemetery. Police said they found the man hiding inside a dumpster near Bradshaw Funeral Home at Rice Street and Magnolia Avenue.
Police reported the man was yelling he had a gun, according to an emergency radio dispatch. “Still trying to talk him out,” an officer reported.
Police used PepperBall, which has a similar effect as pepper spray. Officers discussed strategy and a message was dispatched to officers, “If he comes out running, squads do not chase and do not interfere with the (police) dog,” according to emergency radio traffic.
Soon after, police reported the man was running and an officer radioed, “Shots fired.”
The police department said in a statement early Sunday: “At some point, the man climbed out of the dumpster and ran toward officers, according to preliminary information. Officers deployed Tasers and a K9 in an effort to stop him, and one officer shot the man, who was struck at least twice.”
Police did not release additional information about the circumstances of the shooting, which they said the Minnesota Bureau of Apprehension is investigating. The department said further information would be released by the BCA.
No officers were injured and paramedics transported the man to the hospital.
Preliminary information indicated that officers were wearing body cameras and they were on, according to police.
The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. When the BCA completes the investigation, they will forward it to the county attorney for review.
