A 48-year-old man is in critical condition after crashing his motorcycle in an attempt to avoid hitting a dead dog on a U.S. 90 access road on the West Side, San Antonio police said.

The incident occurred just before 3 a.m near Springvale Drive. According to police, the driver of a gray Audi A4 ran over a dog while traveling eastbound on the access road to enter the highway. The driver pulled over to assess the damage to his vehicle and then heard a loud crash, police said.

The driver of the Audi told police he saw a man struggling to keep his 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle upright as he tried to avoid the dog, SAPD said. The driver said the motorcycle was "wobbling back and forth" before the rider fell off. The motorcycle skidded across the main lanes of U.S. 90 before hitting a guardrail.

The motorcycle driver wasn't wearing a helmet and suffered head trauma, according to police. He was taken to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
