A 22-year-old man who went to a Union County gun range over the weekend was in critical condition on Monday from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
The victim, whose name was not released, suffered a gunshot wound at the RTSP (Right to Self Protect) Range, Firearms & Training on Route 22 East in Union Township, according to township Police Director Dan Zieser.
The man had arrived with three friends and fired a few shots down the range before turning the gun on himself, Zieser said in a statement.
Police received a 911 call at 7:22 p.m. reporting a man had shot himself in the head while at the range, Zieser said.
The victim was taken to University Medical Center in Newark, where he remained in critical condition on Monday, Zieser said.
Union Township police detectives who investigated called the shooting a suicide attempt, but said the matter remains under investigation.
