SAN ANGELO, TX – An infant nearly died Saturday after she was injected with heroin.
According to court documents, on Nov. 7 at around 1:19 a.m., officers with the San Angelo Police Department were dispatched to the 2200 block of Webster Ave. for the report of an unconscious baby.
When officers arrived they found a baby that was unresponsive. The child was immediately taken to Shannon by responding officers. During the ride to Shannon an officer administered CPR.
Once at Shannon, the child was stabilized and then taken to Cook's Medical in Ft. Worth.
After saving the child, officers went and spoke with the parents. When officers entered the home on Webster Ave. they noticed a number of medical equipment including a stethoscope, blood pressure cup, tweezers, and what officers believed to be a blood glucose monitoring device. Officers also noted that the residence was obviously cluttered with clothing and personal items.
They first spoke with the man of the house, 34-year-old Dustin Smock. Smock told officers that him and the child's grandmother, Cristin Bradley, 37, were in the bed with the baby. They left to brush their teeth and came back to find the baby unresponsive. He initially told officers that the baby more than likely had an allergic reaction to the formula.
Officers then learned that the baby was born on August 23, 2020 inside of the home. During the birth the grandmother, Cristin Bradley, cut the umbilical cord with a shoelace.
Bradley also told officers that the baby suffered from colic. Bradley claimed that she was actually taking care of the baby by providing medical care and a place for the mother and child to live.
Officers then spoke with doctors who told them that the baby was in cardio-respiratory failure. She claims that if medical intervention had not occurred then the baby would have died. The doctor also told doctors that they found injection marks on her hand, arm, and head.
The baby also tested positive for opiates.
Cristin Bradley, the child's grandmother was previously charged of heroin possession in 2003 and 2004. Smock has been charged with a number of family violence charges. The child's mother, Destiny Harbour, 21, has never been arrested in Tom Green County prior to Nov. 7.
