DETROIT – A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after his cousin shot him in the head while they were playing with a gun on Tuesday, The Detroit News reports.
The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. on Detroit’s east side. Three boys, ages 10, 12 and 13, were playing with a gun, the report said. The 10-year-old shot the 13-year-old in the head. The victim is in critical condition at a local hospital. The case remains under investigation.
“These are preventable crimes that can be avoided,” Detroit police Capt. Kimberly Blackwell said during a press briefing. “Gun owners need to be more responsible.”
The Detroit Police Department has free gun locks available at all precincts.
