WHITE PLAINS – Westchester County lawmakers voted Monday to reduce the term limit for County Executive George Latimer and future executives from 12 years to eight.
The change will limit Latimer and his successors to two four-year terms, but wouldn't affect a 12-year term limit on lawmakers. Latimer, a Democrat in the third year of his first term, asked for the change and is planning to sign it into law Wednesday.
Latimer didn’t suggest a change to the limit on county lawmakers, saying an individual legislator has less power than the executive seat.
Twelve-year term limits were put in place in county government in 2012, but no one has reached the limit. The law came with a provision that years prior to 2012 wouldn’t count toward the limit for anyone in office at the time.

The earliest anyone could reach the limit is 2024, if there are no changes to the law before then. Legislature Vice Chairwoman Alfreda Williams and Lyndon Williams would face their maximums if they decide to run for reelection two more times and win.
Voting against the change to the executive's limit in the 17-member legislature at its meeting Monday were Chairman Ben Boykin, D-White Plains, and legislators Terry Clemens, D-New Rochelle; Chris Johnson, D-Yonkers; and Lyndon Williams, D-Mount Vernon.
