CARMEL — A swimming instructor who drowned last week in a pool at a suburban Indianapolis country club had a heart condition which ended his college swimming career, a swim coach said.

Benny Liang, 22, was pronounced dead after he was found unresponsive on July 20 at the bottom of the pool at the Woodland Country Club in Carmel, just north of Indianapolis. Toxicology results from his autopsy are pending.

Liang, who was from Whitewater, Wisconsin, had been a part-time instructor with the Carmel Swim Club. He spent a few years swimming at Wabash College before a heart condition ended that pursuit, said Carmel Swim Club head coach Chris Plumb.

But Liang, who graduated this year from the private liberal arts college that's located in Crawfordsville, decided to continue his passion for the water by coaching youths in Carmel. Plumb said Liang was loved for his humor and intelligence during his short period with the club.

“In that short time, you just felt his presence and he lived his values and his passion each and everyday and all of us felt that,” Plumb told WISH-TV.

Wabash College said in a statement that Liang “was a very bright and outgoing young man" who competed for two years on the college’s swimming and diving team.

“It is a tragic loss for everyone," the school said.
