Longmont police shot a man early Friday morning after he reportedly pulled a BB gun designed to look like a pistol on officers.
The man, who has only been identified as a 26-year-old Black man from Illinois, is in critical condition at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland after being airlifted from Longs Peak Hospital in Longmont.
According to a press release, police were called to an apartment complex at 600 Martin Street at 1:11 a.m. Friday for a man with a gun reportedly harassing a woman.
When police arrived, they saw the suspect and asked him to put his hands up and asked if he was armed. The man told police he was not armed and initially complied with orders.
But according to the release, as officers got closer the man pulled what appeared to be a pistol from his waistband and pointed it at officers.
Officers reportedly pulled their weapons and asked the man to put down his weapon, when one officer fired his handgun at the man.
Police said the man then ducked between two cars, and did not comply with more orders to put down the weapon. Another officer then fired a rifle at the man.
The release did not say whether one or both officers hit the man. No police were injured in the shooting.
The gun was later determined to be a pellet gun designed to look like a pistol, according to a release.
Both officers who fired have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the Boulder County Critical Incident Team.
Longmont police are also investigating the alleged harassment incident that led to the initial call.
