Detroit Lakes man accused of fleeing police officer

Austin Westa King, 20, of rural Detroit Lakes, has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony fleeing a peace officer on a motor vehicle and felony fifth-degree controlled substance crime.

According to court records, at 11:35 p.m. July 4, a trooper tried to pull over a vehicle without working tail lights on Highway 59. As the trooper turned around, he saw the vehicle speed up, reaching speeds of 100 mph in a 30 mph zone on Willow Street in Detroit Lakes.

The trooper ended the pursuit, but saw the vehicle parked at a residence a short time later. The vehicle belonged to King. He was found in the garage, and said he fled because his license was revoked. A search of the vehicle turned up over a gram of marijuana wax.

On July 6, District Judge Mike Fritz set cash bail for King at $500 or bond at $5,000, with standard conditions of release, or bond at $20,000 with no conditions.

Rural Waubun man charged with selling meth

Brandon Lee Wichern, 23, of rural Waubun has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony fifth-degree controlled substance crime.

According to court records, on Jan. 21, he sold 1.16 grams of meth (with packaging) to a confidential reliable informant with the West Central Minnesota Drug and Violent Crime Task Force. The deal was made on Facebook Messenger and the sale occurred at Wichern’s home in Detroit Lakes.

On July 6, District Judge Mike Fritz issued a summons for Wichern to appear in court at a date that has not yet been established because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Domestic assault charge filed against Waubun man

Henry Ray Soyring, 35, of rural Waubun has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony domestic assault.

According to court records, on the evening of July 4, tribal police were called to Soyring’s house by a woman who said he was “out of control,” breaking things and throwing things around the residence.

On the way to the home, officers learned from dispatch that Soyring had assaulted the woman. She said he was angry that she wouldn’t take hilton get drugs, and started rampaging around the residence, then pushed her and punched her in the back of the head, causing a lump to form.

Soyring Left before police arrived, but was arrested the next day. He has three prior domestic assault convictions, in 2011, 2013 and 2016.

On July 7, District Judge Mike Fritz set cash bail for Soyring at $4,000 or bond at $30,000, with standard conditions of release, or bond at $50,000 with no conditions.

Pulled over in stolen car, DL man faces charges

Dean Alan Sargent, 40, of Detroit Lakes has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony receiving stolen property, and gross misdemeanor driving after his license was canceled as inimical to public safety.

According to court records, on June 29, he was stopped by an officer for driving 78 mph in a 55 mph zone on Becker County Road 14.

He was driving a gray 2020 Nissan Kicks sports utility vehicle that had no license plates. The car had been stolen, and he admitted his driver’s license was canceled.

On July 1, Becker County District Judge Gretchen Thilmony set cash bail for Sargent at $1,000 or bond at $10,000, with standard conditions of release, or bond at $25,000 with no conditions.

Bemidji man charged after wild police chase in Detroit Lakes

Tremane Santanna Latrell Rainey, 19, of Bemidji has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and gross misdemeanor interfering with a 911 call.

According to court records, on June 20, a deputy saw a red 2019 Dodge Challenger, driven by Rainey, go through a red light on Willow Street in Detroit Lakes.

The deputy turned around and pulled the car over on Willow Street, but when the officer got out and approached the Dodge, the driver sped off. He blew through the four-way stop at Rossman Avenue and headed west on Willow Street at speeds up to 80 mph.

The chase went into rural Becker County and back into Detroit Lakes. At one point, the Dodge passed other vehicles at speeds of 100 to 110 mph, forcing oncoming vehicles to veer off the shoulder to avoid a collision. At another point, the Dodge reached speeds of nearly 140 mph.

Tire deflation devices caused a rear tire on the Challenger to deflate, but it continued northbound on Highway 59, running the red light at Highway 10 at 75 mph.

The vehicle began to slow, allowing a deputy to perform a PIT maneuver on Highway 59 near Old Pit Road, causing the Dodge to roll over in the ditch and ending the pursuit.

A female passenger in the Dodge had called 911 during the chase, causing Rainey to angrily take her phone away. The woman had begged Rainey not to start the chase, and she told police she had considered jumping out of the moving car out of fear over the way he was driving, according to court records.

On July 1, Becker County District Judge Gretchen Thilmony set cash bail for Rainey at $1,500 or bond at $15,000, with standard conditions of release, or bond at $30,000 with no conditions.

Waubun woman faces domestic assault charge

Nicole Grace Jackson, 26, of rural Waubun has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony domestic assault.

According to court records, on July 6, tribal police were called to an Ogema residence after Jackson refused to leave. A man there had several injuries caused by Jackson, who had attacked and bitten him and thrown a lamp at him. The glass in the storm door was shattered and the main door had been gouged with an ax, which was laying on the porch.

Jackson and the man had been living together for about a month. She was previously convicted of domestic assault in 2014 and fourth-degree assault in 2018.

On July 7, District Judge Mike Fritz set cash bail for Jackson at $1,500 or bond at $15,000, with standard conditions of release, or bond at $30,000 with no conditions.

Man accused of fleeing officer on motorcycle

Justin Wayne Richey, 44, of rural Waubun has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle and felony fifth-degree controlled substance crime.

According to court records, at 4 p.m. June 30, a tribal police officer on patrol in White Earth saw him sitting on a motorcycle and knew he was wanted on a warrant. The officer turned his squad car around, but Richey was gone. He spotted him a half-hour later on the motorcycle and chased him on Highway 34.

At one point, the squad car was beside the motorcycle and Richey still didn’t stop. He finally pulled into a residence and submitted to arrest. About a quarter-gram of meth was found in his front pocket, according to court records. Another warrant had been issued earlier that day when he failed to appear for a court hearing in Becker County.

On July 2, he appeared in Becker County District Court, where cash bail was set at $1,000 or bond at $20,000, with standard conditions of release, or bond at $40,000 with no conditions.

Detroit Lakes man charged with meth possession

Casey H.W. Johnson, 37, of rural Detroit Lakes has been charged in Becker County District Court with felony fifth-degree controlled substance crime and gross misdemeanor giving a false name to a peace officer.

According to court records, on June 28, he was pulled over by a deputy who knew he was wanted on a felony warrant. Asked to identify himself, he provided the name of another person to the officer. A search of his person turned up a glass smoking pipe and a cigarette pack containing 1.4 grams of meth.

On June 30, District Judge Gretchen Thilmony set cash bail for Johnson at $1,000 or bond at $10,000, with standard conditions of release, or bond at $20,000 with no conditions.
