An unidentified man remains in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital as of Wednesday after being shot earlier this week at an apartment building in Arlington Heights, according to authorities.

Arlington Heights police announced in a news release that on Monday, officers responded around 7:25 p.m. to a call of shots fired at an apartment building in the 400 block of West Rand Road. Police said in the release that several people called 911 and reported hearing gunshots on the fourth floor of the building.

Upon arriving on the scene, officers found a man in the lobby of the building who had been shot in his leg and lower torso. The incident is being called an aggravated battery with a firearm, according to the release, and authorities are not releasing details related to the incident.

The man received medical attention onsite by responding officers before being treated by fire department paramedics and then transported to an undisclosed Level 1 trauma center for care. The man remains in critical condition, Arlington Heights police officials confirmed with Pioneer Press Wednesday.

Monday night, police searched the apartment building and surrounding area for additional victims or any persons of interest related to the incident, the release states. Authorities would not disclose any additional information except to confirm with Pioneer Press that the man was not a resident of the apartment building.

However, police said in the release that, “initial information strongly suggests the victim was specifically targeted and the incident remains isolated.”

Arlington Heights Police Department detectives and forensic technicians are investigating, according to the release.

Three weeks ago to the day, there was a fire at this same apartment building, police Commander Petar Milutinovic confirmed. However, the commander said there is no connection between the two incidents.

In the case of the fire, an 80-year-old man who lived in the building has been charged with aggravated arson after investigators said he set his apartment on fire.

Milutinovic also said that due to the ongoing investigation into the shooting Monday, and the nature of the incident, personal identifying information regarding the man shot cannot be disclosed.
