A Massachusetts woman almost lost her leg after she developed a medical condition from a single spin class.

After taking the class, Kaelyn Franco, 23, developed a serious medical condition called rhabdomyolysis that left her with severe pain and swelling, according to Today. Franco ended up having to go through emergency surgery in order to save her leg after developing the condition, wherein damaged muscle tissue releases proteins or electrolytes into the bloodstream, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"It really did turn my life upside down," Franco told the outlet. "It was just super traumatic and stressful."

Franco, who loves bike rides, attended the 45-minute class on Sept. 15 after receiving a recommendation from a family member. She informed the outlet that while she was "pushing" herself, she didn't believe she had overexerted.

Franco said that after she "stepped off the bike" her "knees gave out" and she fell to the floor. She continued, "I thought that was strange at first, but then I was like, maybe it's just my muscles are tired, weak, and just a little bit sore."

In an Instagram post , Franco details how she ended up going to the hospital that evening and was "crying in pain." She says she was hospitalized with creatine kinase levels at 259,000, well above the normal range of "33-211 U/L." An increase in CK activity indicates muscle trauma, among other things.

"Although my leg will never be the same and I'll have lifelong complications from this, I am lucky and I am so grateful," she wrote in her post. "I am alive and my leg was saved."

The Washington Examiner reached out to Franco for comment but did not receive a response.
