South Jordan, UT —  A South Jordan police officer is in stable condition after being shot Friday night. According to a press release from the department, police were at a home looking for a suspect in a stolen car case.

Two officers had entered the home at 10450 South Tarali Court,  where they found the suspect in the basement. The suspect opened fire on the police and shot one officer in the leg. The South Jordan police officer was taken to a local hospital and following surgery is currently in stable condition. The second officer was not injured.

Both officers returned fire, critically injuring the suspect who is currently listed in stable but critical condition.

Police Lieutenant Matt Pennington of the South Jordan Police Department, said the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is department policy. Pennington also said the Salt Lake County Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol has been invoked. This team is comprised of investigators from throughout the valley, not including the agency involved. The press release explained this protocol creates a transparent and objective process. Once the investigation is complete, it will be presented to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox released the following statement Saturday morning. “Our hearts are with this brave officer and his family as we pray for his full recovery. We are once again filled with gratitude to the brave men and women who daily put themselves in harm’s way to serve and protect their fellow citizens.”
