An Ocean County man was critically injured Monday night after he was hit by a car in Toms River, authorities said.
Carl Cereghini, 61 of Toms River, was hit shortly before 5 p.m. as he attempted to cross the street near the intersection of Vaughn and Windsor Avenues, according to police.
The vehicle that struck Vaughn was traveling north on Vaughn Avenue, Toms River police said in a statement.
Cereghini was flown to Jersey Shore Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition late Monday, police said.
“The driver of the vehicle stated that Mr. Cereghini entered the roadway in front of them, leaving no time for the driver to stop or avoid hitting him,” police Chief Mitchell A. Little said in the statement.
The driver was not injured. Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Ryan Fitzgerald is investigating the accident, Little said.
