OAKLAND — An installer for a security services company was in critical condition after he was wounded by a stray bullet Thursday afternoon while working at an East Oakland home, authorities said.
The shooting happened about 4 p.m. Thursday in the 2800 block of 76th Avenue near Ney Avenue.
The 61-year-old installer was working outside a home on the block when there was an apparent shootout nearby between different groups, authorities said.
The installer was hit in the back and was taken to a hospital.
ShotSpotter technology recorded more than 20 shots being fired and multiple shell casings of different caliber were recovered in the area, authorities said.
At least one home and a parked vehicle were also hit by the gunfire but no other injuries were reported.
A motive for the shooting is under investigation. No arrests have been made.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $7,500 in reward money for information leading to the arrests of the shooters. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
The shooting is at least the third since Saturday in Oakland where someone has been wounded by stray gunfire.
On Saturday, 23-month old Jasper Wu of Fremont died after he was struck in the head by a stray bullet while he was riding in a car with his mother and some others on southbound Interstate 880 near Filbert Street in West Oakland. Authorities said the bullet that killed the toddler was fired from a rolling gun battle in the northbound lanes of the freeway.And on Wednesday afternoon, a 33-year-old woman waiting in line outside the Fox Theater in the 1900 block of Telegraph Avenue in the Uptown district was hit twice by stray bullets fired during a nearby shootout between a vehicle burglar and the owner of the vehicle, authorities said.
