NORWALK — Mayor Harry Rilling was sworn in Tuesday morning for his fifth term as the city’s leader.
The ceremony, held outside as a COVID-19 precaution, was attended by local clergy, elected officials and members of the community.
Rilling, a Democrat, won his fifth term against Republican challenger Jonathan Riddle during the city’s general election on Nov. 2. Rilling secured 9,006 votes while Riddle earned 5,152 votes.
With the start of his fifth term, Rilling will have the second-longest consecutive administration in Norwalk’s history. The mayor with the longest administration was Frank Esposito.
Esposito had the longest administration in Norwalk’s history since South Norwalk and Norwalk became one municipality in 1913, with seven terms. Esposito, who died in 2013, served for a total of 14 years.
Only one other mayor served five terms — Irving Freese during the 1940s and 1950s — although they were not consecutive, Rilling has said.
Also at the event, the recently elected Common Council members and longstanding Town Clerk Rick McQuaid were sworn in.
Democratic incumbents Dominique Johnson, Barbara Smyth and Greg Burnett secured their spots as at-large Common Council members. Democratic candidates Josh Goldstein and Nora Niedzielski-Eichner were also elected as at-large members.
Democratic District A incumbent David Heuvelman won one of the district’s two seats while newcomer Nicol Ayers, also a Democrat, secured the second spot.
The two incumbent South Norwalk council members, Darlene Young and Diana Revolus, ran uncontested.
In District C, which had a primary in September, incumbent John Kydes and newcomer Jenn McMurrer won the two seats.
For District D, the council’s sole Republican member, Tom Keegan, secured another term while Democratic candidate Heidi Alterman won the second seat.
In District E, the two Democratic incumbents, Tom Livingston and Lisa Shanahan, were both reelected, with Livingston as the highest vote-getter in the district.
