Mayor Ravi Bhalla and his slate swept the Hoboken elections.

Mayor Ravi Bhalla, the first Sikh mayor in the city’s history, has won re-election unopposed and will cruise to a second term in office.

His victory was also bolstered by a clean sweep by his slate in the at-large city council races, where Councilmembers Emily Jabbour and Jim Doyle, and Joe Quintero, a finance worker and the Hoboken Democratic Committee Vice Chair, finished in the top three in the unofficial results.

Jabbour and Doyle are set to win a second and third term respectively in the city council, while Quintero will take the seat of Councilwoman Vanessa Falco, who will leave her seat at the end of her term to become the head of the city’s Division of Housing.

“This was an overwhelming victory tonight for Mayor Bhalla and the Team Bhalla at-large  Council slate of Councilwoman Emily Jabbour, Councilman Jim Doyle and Joe Quintero,” said Team Bhalla spokesperson Rob Horowitz. “Hoboken voters sent a message that they strongly approved of the performance, policies and new proposals of Mayor Bhalla and his Council Team.”

With Bhalla having run unopposed, the focus of the Mile Square City’s elections was the three at-large city council seats. Bhalla’s slate had opposition from the three-person Independently Together slate, which consisted of Sheila Brennan, Paul Presinzano, and Cheryl Fallick, and four independents, which include Patricia Waiters, a perennial candidate, Ian Rintel, owner of Play! Hoboken, Cindy Wiegand, a worker in market research, and Manuel Rivera.

Presinzano, who was part of the Independently Together slate, conceded the election on Twitter. “I may have been unsuccessful in this election but we have to look at the positive,” he said on Twitter. “There are still people willing to try to make Hoboken better.”

Over at the Board of Education elections in the city, the three trustee incumbents Ailene McGuirk, Malani Cademartori and Thomas Kluepfelunder look poised to win another term on the board as the “Building Futures Together” slate. They faced only one challenger in Waiters.
