CORNVILLE — A toddler who was unresponsive Tuesday afternoon when found in a pond in Cornville was listed in critical condition Wednesday at a Bangor hospital, according to police.
The 2-year-old was found in a small farm pond near a house at 85 James Road, according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Moss said the Somerset County Regional Communications Center in Skowhegan received a 911 call about the child at about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday.
“At this point, detectives say the incident appears to be a tragic accident for the family and all of those involved,” Moss wrote in a statement to the news media.
Skowhegan fire Chief Shawn Howard said he was in the area at the time, heard the call and was first to arrive at the pond. He worked to resuscitate the child.
The child was taken by ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital, several miles away in Skowhegan, and then by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Howard said Wednesday he arrived at the scene a few minutes after he heard the call. He declined to provide additional details and referred questions to the Maine State Police.
“I was just a couple of minutes away when I heard the call,” Howard said. “This is a tragic event that first responders never want to be a part of. Fortunately, in central Maine we have competent, great first responders.”
Moss did not respond Wednesday to a request for additional details.
Many emergency workers responded to the call, including Somerset County Sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and the state police major crimes unit, game wardens and forest rangers, according to Moss.
