A 17-year-old boy was hospitalized with severe injuries after he was shot early Thursday while parking his car on a residential street in southwest Santa Rosa, police said.

The boy, who lives in Santa Rosa, told authorities he was heading to a friend’s house alone in his Toyota sedan when he was shot around 12:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of Dutton Avenue, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.

He told authorities he was parking near the house when a dark sedan with at least two people inside pulled up beside his car. The passenger door of the dark sedan swung open and somebody fired a handgun at the boy, who was hit three times. The suspects then drove north on Dutton, police said.

The boy told investigators he didn’t recognize anybody in the car. The attack appears random, said Sgt. Chris Mahurin, a spokesman for the department.

“As of now there’s no motive we can see why this kid would have been targeted,“ Mahurin said, noting that the boy had no criminal history.

Investigators were working to identify the suspects, he said.

The boy was in “serious condition” at a hospital on Thursday, but he was expected to survive his injuries, Mahurin said.
