Oregon standout linebacker Justin Flowe’s previously undisclosed right foot injury is "pretty significant" and could keep him out "longer term," Ducks coach Mario Cristobal said in his news conference on Monday. Cristobal also announced veteran tight end Cam McCormick suffered a season-ending leg injury in Saturday's game.
Flowe, a second-year freshman and former five-star recruit, had 14 tackles and a forced fumble in Oregon’s season-opening win over Fresno State but was a surprising scratch prior to Saturday’s upset win against Ohio State in Columbus. Cristobal revealed after the game that the staff didn’t realize he’d injured himself until Tuesday of last week.
The Ducks were also without preseason All-America defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux against Ohio State due to a sprained ankle. He and Flowe both watched from the sideline. Thibodeaux’s injury appears to be less serious. Cristobal indicated Monday "there was a chance" Thibodeaux could have played last weekend, but his return date remains unclear.
"He’s getting better and better," Cristobal said. "You just don't know. Those things are tricky."
McCormick, a sixth-year senior, had one catch for 16 yards against the Buckeyes. Remarkably, this is the fourth consecutive year he has either missed a season to injury or sustained a season-ending injury within the first two weeks. He had previously been granted a rare seventh year of eligibility by the NCAA even before the free year given to all players last season due to COVID-19.
