Vermont Business Magazine Donna Austin-Hawley is the new president of the United Way of Northwest Vermont board of directors.

Austin-Hawley assumed her new responsibilities on Tuesday, replacing Chris Lyon, who is stepping down after six years on the board, one as chair. Lyon, a longtime executive at Seventh Generation, has accepted a new professional position in Maine.

Austin-Hawley, of Williston, is the Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Northfield Savings Bank. She has a long history with United Way, having been a member of the Campaign Cabinet since 2010 and the board of directors since 2017. She also sits on the boards of Vermont Public Radio and Vermont PBS and the Burlington Business Association.

“Donna’s compassionate advocacy, insight and wisdom have made her an indispensable contributor on our board,” Lyon said. “Donna will be a strong collaborator and leader, working with board and staff to ensure we deliver on our promise to build a stronger Northwest Vermont by mobilizing our community to improve people’s lives.”

“By nature, and profession, I am motivated by providing opportunities to employees to develop and succeed, resulting in a stronger organization, a good fit to the mission of United Way to improve lives and build a stronger community,” said Austin-Hawley. “Having participated in many volunteer roles with United Way over the past decade, most recently as the 2019-2020 Campaign Cabinet Chair, I continue to be impressed by how a driven, knowledgeable United Way team and group of volunteers positively impacts and improves the lives of those that need it the most in our community.”

She thanked her predecessor for “his inspired, passionate leadership while intentionally elevating the focus on diversity, equity and inclusion in our work.”

UWNWVT CEO Jesse Bridges thanked Lyon for his years of service to the organization, including his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Chris provided steady leadership during a difficult time, bringing a passion for community service and an inclusive vision to our board.”

Bridges also welcomed Austin-Hawley to her new role, citing her years of experience with UWNWVT. “For more than a decade, Donna has volunteered with UWNWVT, helping to raise the funds that support our work and the work of our community partners. She brings both extensive management experience and a deep understanding of the work we do to her new role. Both the staff and the board are excited to work with her as our president.”

UWNWVT serves Chittenden, Franklin and Grand Isle counties. Its work ranges from partnering with local organizations to address needs identified by community members, to providing services such as Working Bridges which supports employees at their workplace by helping them with housing, child care, financial planning and more. UWNWVT also connects volunteers to organizations which need them and residents to services in their community.

“United Way focuses on issues identified and prioritized by the community, attacking them at their roots, championing for systemic change and continued support to programs in community based nonprofit organizations,” said Austin-Hawley. “For every dollar raised in the workplace campaign, United Way invests $3.15 back into our community through programs and partnerships like Working Bridges to advance and stabilize employment, providing needed COVID-19 and recovery grants and effectively addressing the opioid crisis.”
