YAKIMA, Wash. — A 17-year-old is in critical condition after being struck with at least 3 bullets when suspected gang members pulled up alongside his car and fired 10 shots at him and his mother.

According to Yakima Police Cpt. Jay Seely, the shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, June 14. The teenager was in the passenger’s seat as his mother drove on Fruitvale Blvd. They allegedly pulled up to the left lane to turn onto N 16th Ave when a green four-door sedan pulled up alongside them and fired into the vehicle.

Three of those bullets struck the victim while others traveled through the car to the sidewalk near a busy taco truck.

Though her son was seriously injured, the mother was not hurt in the incident, per Cpt. Seely. The victim was promptly transported to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. There, he was deemed to be in critical condition.

Yakima Police officials told KAPP-KVEW that the mother identified her son as a gang member. Officers are investigating this incident in relation to other recent shootings in the region, but police officials don’t have enough information to say this is connected to other incidents at this time.

However, Cpt. Seely noted that gang activity is becoming more blatant as of late. There has been a recent increase in gang shootings in broad daylight; regardless of their surroundings.

Authorities are urging the community to stay clear of the intersection of  N 16th Ave and Fruitvale Blvd as they continue their investigation. With this being the case, expect traffic through this afternoon.
